IT (Information Technology) outsourcing is a phrase used to describe the practice of seeking resources or subcontracting outside of an organizational structure for all or part of an IT function. An organization would use IT outsourcing for functions ranging from infrastructure to software development, maintenance and support. For example, an enterprise might outsource its IT management because it is less costly to contract with an ITO provider to provide management than it would be to build its own in-house management teams or a company might outsource all of its data storage needs because it does not want to buy and maintain its own data storage devices. An emerging area requiring IT expertise is data protection and the development and implementation of threat mitigation strategies to protect itself from cybercrime.
A primary goal of an IT outsourcing strategy is to provide the best possible technology to the organization at the best value for the investment. Organizations looking to transform their business often rely on IT outsourcing providers to help them through the process.
Seventy five percent of C-Suite executive and human Resource (HR) professionals agree that they are able to focus on core strategic business functions when non-strategic HR responsibilities are outsourced. In addition, more than 88% report that outsourcing HR reallocates time previously spent on non-core HR functions back to revenue and profit activities, saving money and controlling legal risks (2014 SHRM Human Resources Survey).
In addition to time reallocation, cost savings, improved compliance and governance, more than 62% indicated their reason for outsourcing included gaining access to provider talent, streamlining HR functions, offering services the organization could not otherwise provide and allowing the company to focus on its core business Purpose, Vision and Mission.
According to a 2015 HR trends forecast, US based SMB’s are predicted to further their HR outsourcing strategies in order to remain competitive amid a tightening STEM talent supply in the US. SMBs are expected to increase the adoption of HR outsourcing in the next three years.
Outsourcing HR activities can result in saving from capital, labor and operating costs. According to research by Cornell University, SMBs can achieve 22% higher revenue growth, 23% faster profit growth and 67% lower employee turnover when using effective outsourced HR management systems. In fact, organizations can anticipate instant savings in overall HR spending in the 10%-to-15% range depending on how much of the total HR function is outsourced.
